James, an admirer of Stéphane Grappelli, began improvising on the violin shortly after completing his Yale degree, at first sitting in with various ensembles around Chicago, and then forming the James Sanders Trio in 1990. Developing his jazz chops through constant work, he became a regular member Alfonso Ponticelli’s Gypsy Jazz ensemble Swing Gitan in 1995. At some point he began to explore the neighborhood music of his youth, and he formed Conjúnto in 2001.
Conjúnto started as a fairly conventional Latin jazz unit, fusing Afro-Latin rhythms to jazz harmonies and improvising. A nucleus formed around Sanders and reed player extraordinaire Steve Eisen. At one point the lineup featured a vocalist and a more hard core salsa approach. Meanwhile,
Sanders continued to work with other jazz musicians, gradually finding gigs with some of the city’s vaunted AACM collective of improvisers, including Dee Alexander, Hamid Drake, and Harrison Bankhead. At the same time, he was on call to support touring salsa stars from New York, including the keyboardist / arranger of the legendary Fania All-Stars, Larry Harlow. There was no let up in his classical schedule, either. Just like back at the magnet school, Sanders refuses to confine himself artistically to any one culture.
All of this found its way into Conjúnto. As the line up solidified, James concentrated on hiring players who not only thoroughly understood the fundamentals of Afro-Latin traditions, but possessed the improvisational chops and musicianship to follow his lead into, for Latin jazz, uncharted territory. The result is an approach that, at its best, completely absorbs the vast repository of African and western music into a unique and original vision.

Marshall Vente – pianist / composer / arranger

Marshall Vente will be playing two roles at Katerina’s for this evening of “Southport Records Presents”:  performing solo at the piano, and accompanying vocalist Joanie Pallatto, reprising their critically acclaimed Southport Records recording, “Two” – Joanie interprets songs from the world song book of great pop and classic standards with Vente on the 9’ Baldwin Grand.

Vente, in everyday life, plays equal roles as Pianist, Bandleader, Composer, Arranger, Radio Host and Contractor.  A diverse taste in music aids his survival in the music business.  A life in jazz has taken him from touring Europe as a teenager, ‘68; a National Endowment for Arts jazz apprentice with Gil Evans and David Matthews, ’82 – ‘87; NEA & IAC Composer grants; collaborations and CDs with Eldee Young, Billy Harper, Neville York; and as impresario of his annual Jazz Tropicale Cruise aboard the tall ship Windy in mid-July since 1995.  His love of Brazilian music brought him to the airwaves as radio host of Jazz Tropicale heard every Sunday on 90.9fm WDCB since 1993 – “It’s a jazz show with a few palm trees!”  Vente is currently leading and playing gigs nearly every day!

Joanie Pallatto – vocalist / composer

A native of Xenia, Ohio, Joanie Pallatto is a graduate of The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.  Joanie toured with The Glenn Miller Orchestra as a featured vocalist before moving to Chicago in 1979 to pursue her career in music.

Pallatto’s discography includes recordings with Bradley Parker-Sparrow, Marshall Vente, Willie Pickens, Von Freeman, Bob Dorough, Fareed Haque, King Fleming, Tatsu Aoki, Bobby Lewis, Famoudou Don Moye and many more.

Co-owner and partner with pianist/composer and husband, Bradley Parker-Sparrow at Sparrow Sound Design Recording Studio and Southport Records, Joanie’s engineering expertise is displayed in the areas of recording, mixing and mastering, along with CD production, producing, arranging and composing.

Southport Records presents an ongoing series of events at Katerina’s on the first Saturday of every month!  Label partners Bradley Parker-Sparrow, piano and Joanie Pallatto, voice will open each set with their original duets and improvisations.  Southport Records will present a mix of artists from the label roster, featuring jazz, avant garde, classical, world and new music.  The co-host of this event, Katerina’s, has evolved into a unique listening experience and environment, with fine programming, including jazz, world, and pop forms. Rich Cantú – Señor Cantú

     Southport Records presents the debut solo CD from singer-songwriter and guitarist Rich Cantú.  “Señor Cantú” is a studio recording, boasting 12 original compositions (in either Spanish or English) and one classic (“El Jinete.”)  Cantu weaves a spell with his stories and songs, complete with his ‘one man band’ of vocals, whistling, mouth clicks, percussive foot taps and guitar.

“On a warm Tuesday evening on Southport Avenue in Chicago, a voice resonated from the open front dining area of a restaurant called Coobah.  Turning into the bar, a slender man was playing electric guitar in the corner, next to a large amp that boasted the setting 96.  The broad tenor voice and lush chords fell into the evening air.  This was such a profound discovery, just 2 blocks south of Southport Records.  The voice was lush and real.  Many of the songs, in both English and Spanish, were Cantú originals.  Of Polish and Mexican descent, Cantú has mastered the art of the romantic ballad, via Chicago, and the world.”

Rich Cantu – Voice and Acoustic Guitar

     Rich Cantú is a singer/songwriter from Chicago who has been performing for over 20 years. Playing guitar, bass, piano and a variety of other instruments, he has performed at many venues in the Midwest. From the Congress Theatre to the Riviera, Rich has sung with numerous bands and mariachis as well as delighted audiences with his powerful voice and mastery of the guitar as a solo artist. He has performed on such shows as “Despierta America” as well as having a series of solo specials on local Chicago cable dedicated to his solo work. Rich Cantu led the Chicago based Spanish rock group “Antenna the Band” from 2005 -2009. As the songwriter and lead singer they had a #1 hit on Chicago radio with the song “Paris” for close to 6 months, along the way winning many awards and accolades for being the best Spanish rock band in Chicago. Writing music and putting his own twist on all the classic music written over the years is his passion. “Enjoy every song you play” is his motto. Hope you agree and enjoy as well.

An Evening With Rachelle Ferrell

” Composer, lyricist, arranger, musician, and vocalist Rachelle Ferrell is a recent arrival on the contemporary jazz scene, but her visibility on the pop/urban contemporary scene has boosted her audience’s interest in her jazz recordings.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Ferrell got started singing in the second grade at age six. This no doubt contributed to the eventual development of her startling six-and-change octave range. She decided early on, after classical training on violin, that she wanted to try to make her mark musically as an instrumentalist and songwriter. In her mid-teens, her father bought her a piano with the provision that she’d learn to play to a professional level. Within six months, Ferrell had secured her first professional gig as a pianist/singer. She began performing at 13 as a violinist, and in her mid-teens as a pianist and vocalist. At 18, she enrolled in the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study composition and arranging, where her classmates included Branford Marsalis, Kevin Eubanks, Donald Harrison, and Jeff Watts. She graduated in a year and taught music for a while with Dizzy Gillespie for the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Through the ’80s and into the early ’90s, she worked with some of the top names in jazz, including Gillespie, Quincy Jones, George Benson, and George Duke.

Ferrell’s debut, “First Instrument,” was released in 1990 in Japan only. Recorded with bassist Tyrone Brown, pianist Eddie Green, and drummer Doug Nally, an all-star cast of accompanists also left their mark on her record. They include trumpeter Terrence Blanchard, pianists Gil Goldstein and Michel Petrucciani, bassists Kenny Davis and Stanley Clarke, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, and keyboardist Pete Levin. Her unique take on now-standards like Sam Cooke’s “You Send Me,” Cole Porter’s “What Is This Thing Called Love,” and Rodgers & Hart’s “My Funny Valentine,” captured the hearts and souls of the Japanese jazz-buying public.

In 1995, Blue Note/Capitol released her Japanese debut for U.S. audiences, and the response was similarly positive. Her 1992 self-titled U.S. debut, a more urban pop/contemporary album, was released on Capitol Records. Ferrell was signed to a unique two-label contract, recording pop and urban contemporary for Capitol Records and jazz music for Blue Note Records.

For four consecutive years in the early ’90s, Ferrell put in festival-stopping performances at the Montreaux Jazz Festival. Although Ferrell has captured the jazz public’s attention as a vocalist, she continues to compose and write songs on piano and violin. Ferrell’s work ethic has paid off, and Gillespie’s predictions about her becoming a “major force” in the jazz industry came true.

Her prolific songwriting abilities and ability to accompany herself on piano seem only to further her natural talent as a vocalist. “Some people sing songs like they wear clothing, they put it on and take it off,” she explains in the biographical notes accompanying First Instrument. “But when one performs four sets a night, six nights a week, that experience affords you the opportunity to present the song from the inside out, to express its essence. In this way, a singer expresses the song in the spirit in which it was written. The songwriter translates emotion into words. The singer’s job is to translate the words back into emotion.” Ferrell has made her mark not as a straight-ahead jazz singer and pianist, but as a crossover artist who is equally at home with urban contemporary pop, gospel, classical music, and jazz. “

Lampkin collaborations with Suzanne include studio, ("Robin Kay’s "I Didn’t Got to My Prom" the first dance release from LMG, that reached number 24 on the club charts, remaining on the chart 9 months, for which Suzanne provided backups and character voices) and stage: the co-production with Healthworks of "But the World Goes ‘Round" at the Mercury Theater where Suzanne sang the Streisand classic "How Lucky Can You Get?") ; while also working with Suzanne during the benefit Christmas shows for Teen Living Programs, also at the Mercury Theater, co-produced by CCP.

MARK STREDER BIO:

Mark Streder was born and raised in the western suburbs of Chicago. In addition to playing piano and electronic keyboards with many of Chicagoland’s top musicians for 20 years, Mark Streder has owned and operated a music production studio producing many projects for television and radio broadcast as well as corporate and industrial clients. He is on the faculty at Elmhurst College teaching music theory, electronic music, and jazz piano.

Joanie will perform an evening of her original songs accompanied by jazz musicians

Dave Gordon, Eric Hochberg and her husband and writing partner, Bradley Parker

Sparrow.

Portions of ticket sales will be donated to three non-profit – the Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame,

Pride Films and Plays, and Season of Concern.

Described by Rick Kogan of the Chicago Tribune as having “a stirring and special

voice,” Joanie Pallatto is a graduate of The University of Cincinnati College-

Conservatory of Music. Pallatto toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra as a

featured vocalist; is now co-owner and partner with pianist/composer and husband,

Bradley Parker-Sparrow at Sparrow Sound Design Recording Studio and

Southport and Northport Records.

As a solo singer, group singer and voiceover talent, she has recorded on hundreds

of radio and television commercials nationally. 

Over the last 25 years, Joanie has appeared at some of the best venues in the

Midwest, they include: Andy’s,  Katerina’s, The Chicago Jazz Festival, Chicago

Cultural Center, The Old Town School of Folk Music, Park West, and Bailiwick

Theater; she was also a featured soloist with Daniel Barenboim in "Ellington Among

Friends" at Symphony Center in 1999.

Joanie’s recording career features her critically acclaimed recordings: “Whisper Not,”

followed by “ Who Wrote This Song?" (1994), "Passing Tones" (1995), "FIRE with

Von Freeman” (1996), "Two" with pianist/arranger Marshall Vente (1997), "Words and

Music" (1999), and the 2000 release of "The King and I" with legendary pianist/composer

King Fleming.  Pallatto has continually recorded original music on new releases with

Sparrow, including "We Are Not Machines" (2001), "Canned Beer" (2003), and "The Light,

a tone poem" (2004).

Joanie, the songwriter, released her first set of original tunes "It’s Not Easy" in

2008. Her current CD " As You Spend Your Life " is experiencing enhanced visibility

with the addition of her You Tube site featuring the music videos: “For My Mother’s

Love,” “As You Spend Your Life” and “Playa Bonita.”

Christopher Loudon  in the May 2011 issue of Jazz Times says of Pallatto “Pallatto

sounds a lot like Stevie Nicks – if, that is, Nicks was a top-drawer jazz stylist of

expansive musical tastes and keen instincts.” and “Trying to channel Pallatto is

AgnesShawn Payne a.k.a. Shawn Payne, jazz stylist, was raised in a military family that traveled extensively and that were really into the Fine Arts. As a student in high school, she played classical piano as well as other pop tunes. She studied classical piano and drama at Miami-Dade Junior College and Paul La Pierre School of the Arts in Florida and then DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois where she received a Bachelors of Arts Degree. Her mother, an ex-jazz singer, was her main influence in introducing Agnes and her siblings to the sounds of jazz.

While in Miami she performed with several musicians from the Count Basie Band as well as Don Scaletta, Eddie Higgins, Tony and Dolph Castellano, Ira Sullivan, Pete Minger, and many more national and international well-known jazz musicians residing in Florida.

She moved to the Tampa Bay area where she continued to pursue her career as a professional jazz stylist. While residing in the bay area as well as West Palm Beach, she became a prominent and well-known jazz vocalist being honored with an award as the best jazz vocalist in the Tampa Bay area. Agnes performed under the name Shawn Payne in several concerts and festivals in Miami, Cocoa Beach, St. Petersburg, Orlando, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Florida as an opening act for several well known jazz artist such as Miles Davis, Ramsey Lewis, Marlena Shaw, Sonny Rollins, Carmen McCrae as well as performing at jazz clubs throughout the Miami, Tampa Bay and West Palm Beach areas.

While in Tampa, she recorded an album in 1989 that received rave reviews from Jazz Times, Jazz South, Miami Times, Players magazine, and USA Today.

After recording her first album in Florida, she moved to Chicago and immediately begin to perform with some of Chicago’s well-known international and national jazz musicians at the Green Mill, Andy’s Jazz Club, Pop’s for Champagne, Jazz Bulls, Underground Wonder Bar, Velvet Lounge and other jazz establishments within the
Chicago area.

AgnesShawn has graced the stage with notable jazz artist such as Willie Pickens, John Bany, George Bean, Jody Christian, Robert Shy, John Whitfield, Von Freeman, and other well-known local, national and international jazz artists from the Chicago area. After a hiatus, she has returned recording three CD‘s. Her fourth CD was recorded live at Dee’s Place in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. Shawn is currently performing at Dee’s Place in Wicker Park every Saturday night from 8:30 – 11:30 pm.

Hyde Park Jazz Society is pleased to present actress and vocalist Ava Logan at L26. A veterinarian by day and a jazz singer by night, Ava has become a favorite around town as she sings songs from vocalists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne. Joining her will be Miguel de la Cerna on piano, Chuck Webb on bass, and George Fludas on drums. James Walker of www.jazzchicago.net praised Ava’s "style and class and great delivery that capture the imagination and attention of the audience," and Harry Porterfield of CBS 2 Chicago has called her a "jewel of a vocalist."
