Saxophonist, MELVIN BUTLER, in 1993, caught the attention of jazz vocalist Betty Carter and performed with her trio at Carnegie Hall during the JVC Jazz Festival. Melvin has also worked with Donald Byrd and Christian McBride, among others. Although relatively new to the Chicago scene, Melvin has been performing around the world with the highly acclaimed Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band. He is now developing quite a local following, having performed to a standing room only crowd at last year’s Hyde Park Jazz Festival and excited the audience during the Summer Jazz in the Courtyard series in Hyde Park.

HYDE PARK JAZZ SOCIETY!

The Sunday night jazz series that we have sponsored for almost five years is, temporarily, on hiatus. In addition to fines, the City of Chicago has closed Room 43 for thirty days for having presented our music without a PPA license. We are still attempting to clear the paperwork necessary to get the license, but we have encountered a number of obstacles. We view this as an impediment, but not as an end. Jazz will return to the mid south side. The Hyde Park Jazz Society has no intention of letting Jim Wagner’s dream end here!

Victor Goines is widely recognized as one of the most engaging and versatile performers, composers, collaborators and educators in music today. Drawing from his New Orleans roots, his extraordinary career includes performances throughout the world earning acclaim from audiences, critics, students and colleagues.

Deeply committed to the field of jazz education, Mr. Goines currently holds the position of Northwestern University Artistic Director for the Jazz Studies program, Education Consultant for Jazz at Lincoln Center and has conducted master classes, clinics, workshops, lectures and lessons for The Denver School of the Arts, John Schreiber Group, Greater New Orleans Suzuki Foundation, Cornell University, the Columbus Youth Jazz Ensemble, The University of Scranton and numerous performing arts centers while touring with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. His education posts have included Professor of Jazz Saxophone/Woodwinds and Jazz Studies at Florida A & M University, Adjunct Professor at Xavier University, and a member of the faculties of Loyola University and the University of New Orleans.

A member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra since 1993, Mr. Goines also has an active solo career performing and recording with The Victor Goines Quartet including Sunrise to Midnight (2000), To Those We Love So Dearly (1999), Joe’s Blues (1998) and Genesis (1992). In addition to his solo releases, he has performed and collaborated with artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, The Wynton Marsalis Septet, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Marcus Roberts and the Academy of Ascension, The Smithsonian Masterworks Orchestra, The Wycliffe Gordon Quintet, The Herlin Riley Quintet, Terence Blanchard, Ruth Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Diana Krall, Dianne Reeves, Don Vappie and the Creole Jazz Serenaders, Irma Thomas, Marcia Ball, Bo Didley Freddie Hubbard, James Moody, Damon Short, Freddie Green, Marlon Jordan, The George French Trio and a host of other renowned musicians and ensembles.

Mr. Goines exhibits a maturity and soulfulness that bespeaks his dues playing and his understanding of the importance of this history and tradition. -Offbeat

Born in 1961 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Goines has played the clarinet since the age of eight. He continued his studies with Carl Blouin, Sr., who introduced him to the saxophone at St. Augustine High School. In 1980, he entered Loyola University in New Orleans where he studied clarinet and saxophone, receiving a Bachelor of Music Education Degree in 1984. As Mr. Goines’s interest in jazz increased, he contacted Ellis Marsalis in 1983 to take private lessons. Eight months later, Mr. Marsalis selected Mr. Goines to play saxophone as a member of his quartet. Mr. Goines left New Orleans in 1987 to pursue his graduate studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia receiving his Master of Music Degree in 1990.

Founded by James W. Wagner, the Hyde Park Jazz Society is committed to the encouragement, promotion, and expansion of jazz performance in the greater Hyde Park community and mid-south side, as well as to the education of young jazz musicians and expansion of the jazz listening audience.
The Hyde Park Jazz Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

HPJS History

In 1995, James W. Wagner formed the Committee to Restore Jazz to Hyde Park with the goal of returning Hyde Park to its glory days as a mecca for jazz musicians and fans. The committee enlisted the support of the past two presidents of the University of Chicago, Hugo Sonnenschein and Don Michael Randel, which resulted in the relocation of the Checkerboard Lounge to Harper Court in Hyde Park. The Committee to Restore Jazz to Hyde Park reconstituted itself as the Hyde Park Jazz Society in 2006 and successfully sponsored CheckerJAZZ, a Sunday night jazz series at the "New Checkerboard Lounge for Blues and Jazz," and supported performance by high school jazz musicians with a Sunday afternoon school series. In June 2009, the relationship between the Hyde Park Jazz Society and the Checkerboard Lounge ended. The Sunday night jazz series continues to thrive at its new venue, ROOM 43, less than one mile north of its former location. This new venue has won praise from our audience and musicians alike.

Tributes

The Hyde Park Jazz Society and its partner, John Wright Music, began a program of honoring jazz musicians, promoters, and supporters who have made distinguished contributions to jazz in Chicago. These tributes occur periodically throughout the year and are presented at the break between the first and second sets during our Sunday JAZZ series. Follow our calendar for the next scheduled tribute.

About our Founder

It was with great sorrow that the Board of the Hyde Park Jazz Society announced the passing of its founder, James W. Wagner, on Saturday, 10 January 2009. Through his relentless efforts and commitment, he fulfilled his dream of bringing jazz back to Hyde Park. We are grateful he lived long enough to see his dream come to fruition through our very successful Sunday evening jazz series and the Hyde Park Jazz Festival. We will miss him, but will never forget him.

Hyde Park Jazz Festival

The Hyde Park Jazz Society has become a proud partner with the University of Chicago and the Hyde Park Alliance for Arts and Culture (HyPa) in presenting the Hyde Park Jazz Festival, the first of which was held on September 29, 2007 and featured 13 hours of free jazz!
The 2nd Annual Hyde Park Jazz Festival (14 hours of free jazz) took place on Saturday, September 27, 2008.
The 3rd Annual Hyde Park Jazz Festival (15 hours of free jazz) was another great success on Saturday, September 26, 2009.
The 4th Annual Hyde Park Jazz Festival was Saturday, September 25, 2010 & had record attendance too.
