Marshall Vente – pianist / composer / arranger

Marshall Vente will be playing two roles at Katerina’s for this evening of “Southport Records Presents”:  performing solo at the piano, and accompanying vocalist Joanie Pallatto, reprising their critically acclaimed Southport Records recording, “Two” – Joanie interprets songs from the world song book of great pop and classic standards with Vente on the 9’ Baldwin Grand.

Vente, in everyday life, plays equal roles as Pianist, Bandleader, Composer, Arranger, Radio Host and Contractor.  A diverse taste in music aids his survival in the music business.  A life in jazz has taken him from touring Europe as a teenager, ‘68; a National Endowment for Arts jazz apprentice with Gil Evans and David Matthews, ’82 – ‘87; NEA & IAC Composer grants; collaborations and CDs with Eldee Young, Billy Harper, Neville York; and as impresario of his annual Jazz Tropicale Cruise aboard the tall ship Windy in mid-July since 1995.  His love of Brazilian music brought him to the airwaves as radio host of Jazz Tropicale heard every Sunday on 90.9fm WDCB since 1993 – “It’s a jazz show with a few palm trees!”  Vente is currently leading and playing gigs nearly every day!

Joanie Pallatto – vocalist / composer

A native of Xenia, Ohio, Joanie Pallatto is a graduate of The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.  Joanie toured with The Glenn Miller Orchestra as a featured vocalist before moving to Chicago in 1979 to pursue her career in music.

Pallatto’s discography includes recordings with Bradley Parker-Sparrow, Marshall Vente, Willie Pickens, Von Freeman, Bob Dorough, Fareed Haque, King Fleming, Tatsu Aoki, Bobby Lewis, Famoudou Don Moye and many more.

Co-owner and partner with pianist/composer and husband, Bradley Parker-Sparrow at Sparrow Sound Design Recording Studio and Southport Records, Joanie’s engineering expertise is displayed in the areas of recording, mixing and mastering, along with CD production, producing, arranging and composing.

Southport Records presents an ongoing series of events at Katerina’s on the first Saturday of every month!  Label partners Bradley Parker-Sparrow, piano and Joanie Pallatto, voice will open each set with their original duets and improvisations.  Southport Records will present a mix of artists from the label roster, featuring jazz, avant garde, classical, world and new music.  The co-host of this event, Katerina’s, has evolved into a unique listening experience and environment, with fine programming, including jazz, world, and pop forms. Rich Cantú – Señor Cantú

     Southport Records presents the debut solo CD from singer-songwriter and guitarist Rich Cantú.  “Señor Cantú” is a studio recording, boasting 12 original compositions (in either Spanish or English) and one classic (“El Jinete.”)  Cantu weaves a spell with his stories and songs, complete with his ‘one man band’ of vocals, whistling, mouth clicks, percussive foot taps and guitar.

“On a warm Tuesday evening on Southport Avenue in Chicago, a voice resonated from the open front dining area of a restaurant called Coobah.  Turning into the bar, a slender man was playing electric guitar in the corner, next to a large amp that boasted the setting 96.  The broad tenor voice and lush chords fell into the evening air.  This was such a profound discovery, just 2 blocks south of Southport Records.  The voice was lush and real.  Many of the songs, in both English and Spanish, were Cantú originals.  Of Polish and Mexican descent, Cantú has mastered the art of the romantic ballad, via Chicago, and the world.”

Rich Cantu – Voice and Acoustic Guitar

     Rich Cantú is a singer/songwriter from Chicago who has been performing for over 20 years. Playing guitar, bass, piano and a variety of other instruments, he has performed at many venues in the Midwest. From the Congress Theatre to the Riviera, Rich has sung with numerous bands and mariachis as well as delighted audiences with his powerful voice and mastery of the guitar as a solo artist. He has performed on such shows as “Despierta America” as well as having a series of solo specials on local Chicago cable dedicated to his solo work. Rich Cantu led the Chicago based Spanish rock group “Antenna the Band” from 2005 -2009. As the songwriter and lead singer they had a #1 hit on Chicago radio with the song “Paris” for close to 6 months, along the way winning many awards and accolades for being the best Spanish rock band in Chicago. Writing music and putting his own twist on all the classic music written over the years is his passion. “Enjoy every song you play” is his motto. Hope you agree and enjoy as well.

“As You Spend Your Life” is a look into the heart, home and essence of Chicago singer-songwriter Joanie Pallatto.  This recording is an evolution of all of her life’s passions, creating new songs that identify her unique and modern vision.

These are “Pop Songs with a Jazz Sensibility.”

The life journey includes songs about her mother, “For My Mother’s Love”, the opening track and the first Music Video from the new CD.  Social and political waters are tested in “It Didn’t Rain” (the recent flooding in Tennessee) and the guitar duo ballad “And He’s Growing Old” (the plight of the unwanted and homeless.)  A tropical Caribbean flavor is present in the danceable “Playa Bonita.”

Pallatto has enlisted her usual cohorts, musicians that raise the bar in any recording project.  You’ll hear guitar giant Fareed Haque, harmonica master and pianist Howard Levy, and a special feature with jazz legend, pianist and singer Bob Dorough on the great Frank Foster tune, “Simone” – (with new lyrics by Pallatto.)  You’ll also hear Bradley Parker-Sparrow, Dave Onderdonk, Eric Hochberg, Michael Raynor, Alex Austin, Greg Fundis, Jason Smart and Larry Gray with vocalists April Aloisio, Nanette Frank, Diane Madison and Teresa Davis!

“As You Spend Your Life” is the 11th Southport release from Pallatto, and the 2nd CD of all original songs, following “It’s Not Easy” from 2008.  These songs are like chapters in an ongoing life novel projecting new memories and dreams.  Liner notes by Katerina!

Josie Falbo:

Josie Falbo is a true Chicago legend! As one of Chicago’s busiest and most frequently heard studio singers for over 35 years, Josie’s debut release for Southport Records is filled with her love of many forms of music, especially R&B and Jazz.

Falbo sings and swings her way through 15 delectable tracks, from “At Last” and “Oh Happy Day” to “The Very Thought Of You” and “Triste” – with a “who’s who” of Chicago recording artists, including Peter Polzak, Richie Davis, Bobby Schiff, Alejo Poveda, Bobby Lewis, Larry Gray, Pat Ferreri, Jim Trompeter, Laurence Hobgood and many, many more!

Josie’s vocal career began singing in Italian and English when she was 19 months old! She won voice scholarships in both high school and college, and performed solo at the Lyric Opera House using her multi-range voice in both the classical and pop idioms. Vocally she can deliver the Gospel power of Mahalia Jackson, rock as hard as Pat Benatar, Be-Bop with the best of ‘em or perform today’s contemporary hits with a style and sound that will amaze and impress any audience. Signed to Vee-Jay Records in 1963, Falbo released a ’45 – “Leave Me Alone / Easy To Love” which served as an early catalyst for her life in music and recording. The annual “Festa Italiana” on Taylor Street in Chicago always brings back a ‘slice of life’ for the neighborhood of Falbo’s youth, where she performs each year.

Falbo’s vocal talents can be heard on countless commercials [in various languages on 4 different continents] including McDonald’s, Mr. Clean, Sara Lee, Oscar Mayer, Green Giant, United Airlines, Budweiser, as well as the "Cruisin’ USA" Video Game, on the re- recorded sequences of the recently restored Orson Welles classic film “Othello”, on the TV show ads for “Dave’s World” as well as the theme song for the TV show "Chicago Story". In 2006, Falbo was inducted into the Order Sons Of Italy Hall Of Fame for lifetime achievement in the arts. Josie Falbo’s work with Chicago’s critically and internationally acclaimed "Lakeside Singers" has been seen and heard by thousands on TV as well as in person at their spring and Christmas shows.

Southport Records presents an ongoing series of events at Katerina’s on the first Saturday of every month!  Label partners Bradley Parker-Sparrow, piano and Joanie Pallatto, voice will open each evening with their original duets and improvisations.

The early evening sets will present a mix of artists from the label roster, featuring jazz, avant garde, classical, world and new music.

The co-host of this event, Katerina’s, has evolved into a unique listening experience and environment, with fine programming, including jazz, world, and pop forms.

As always, Katerina’s serves great cocktails and fine food!  Katerina’s – an eclectic club with its soul in the arts.

Rich Cantu – Vocals and Acoustic Guitar

Rich Cantu is a singer/songwriter from Chicago who has been performing for over 20 years. Playing guitar, bass, piano and a variety of other instruments, he has performed at many venues in the Midwest. From the Congress Theatre to the Riviera, Rich has sung with numerous bands and mariachis as well as delighted audiences with his powerful voice and mastery of the guitar as a solo artist. He has performed on such shows as "Despierta America" as well as having a series of solo specials on local Chicago cable dedicated to his solo work. Rich Cantu led the Chicago based Spanish rock group “Antenna the Band” from 2005 -2009. As the songwriter and lead singer they had a #1 hit on Chicago radio with the song "Paris" for close to 6 months, along the way winning many awards and accolades for being the best Spanish rock band in Chicago. Writing music and putting his own twist on all the classic music written over the years is his passion. "Enjoy every song you play" is his motto. Hope you agree and enjoy as well.
