“ Produced and arranged by Mark Messing (Mucca Pazza) and recorded at Maestro-matic studios, Soundproof Box is Ami’s follow up to her 2009 debut LP, Archaeologist and expands on the recording sessions that spawned last year’s folk-punk and cabaret inspired three-song EP, Purging.

Starting off with the Bacharach-ian jazz-pop instrumentation of the album’s kickoff  “I’m Pregnant,” Soundproof Box once again showcases the way Ami and her backing band, The Outcome, can ingeniously wade from the dark theatrics of the title song to the Mexicali of “Serenade” or the stripped-down bad romance of “Glass Full of Blue.” But it’s Ami’s voice – a strong, worldly presence that has been likened to Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday – that pulls it all together.

Ami is a veteran of Chicago’s eclectic and varied music scene – before she released her first solo album, Archaeologist, Ami was a member of pop collective Radiant Darling and R&B band Pelvic Delta, and has toured locally and regionally with appearances at The Hideout, The Empty Bottle, Metro and Double Door. A classically-trained pianist and a former music
major at Indiana University, Ami also plays accordion and the guitar. In October 2011, Ami was also awarded a $15,000 3Arts Award . “

Saxophonist, MELVIN BUTLER, in 1993, caught the attention of jazz vocalist Betty Carter and performed with her trio at Carnegie Hall during the JVC Jazz Festival. Melvin has also worked with Donald Byrd and Christian McBride, among others. Although relatively new to the Chicago scene, Melvin has been performing around the world with the highly acclaimed Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band. He is now developing quite a local following, having performed to a standing room only crowd at last year’s Hyde Park Jazz Festival and excited the audience during the Summer Jazz in the Courtyard series in Hyde Park.

James, an admirer of Stéphane Grappelli, began improvising on the violin shortly after completing his Yale degree, at first sitting in with various ensembles around Chicago, and then forming the James Sanders Trio in 1990. Developing his jazz chops through constant work, he became a regular member Alfonso Ponticelli’s Gypsy Jazz ensemble Swing Gitan in 1995. At some point he began to explore the neighborhood music of his youth, and he formed Conjúnto in 2001.
Conjúnto started as a fairly conventional Latin jazz unit, fusing Afro-Latin rhythms to jazz harmonies and improvising. A nucleus formed around Sanders and reed player extraordinaire Steve Eisen. At one point the lineup featured a vocalist and a more hard core salsa approach. Meanwhile,
Sanders continued to work with other jazz musicians, gradually finding gigs with some of the city’s vaunted AACM collective of improvisers, including Dee Alexander, Hamid Drake, and Harrison Bankhead. At the same time, he was on call to support touring salsa stars from New York, including the keyboardist / arranger of the legendary Fania All-Stars, Larry Harlow. There was no let up in his classical schedule, either. Just like back at the magnet school, Sanders refuses to confine himself artistically to any one culture.
All of this found its way into Conjúnto. As the line up solidified, James concentrated on hiring players who not only thoroughly understood the fundamentals of Afro-Latin traditions, but possessed the improvisational chops and musicianship to follow his lead into, for Latin jazz, uncharted territory. The result is an approach that, at its best, completely absorbs the vast repository of African and western music into a unique and original vision.

Jazz harmonica virtuoso and 2012 Grammy winner Howard Levy and noted musicians on the UIC jazz faculty will perform in an evening concert highlighting the third annual High School Jazz Festival at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Noted Chicago jazz artists who teach at UIC, including Ernie Adams (percussion), Patricia Barber (vocals), Ari Brown (saxophone), Orbert Davis (trumpet), Stewart Miller (bass), Peter Stoltzman (piano), and Zvonimir Tot (guitar), will score and critique the performances of 10 to 14 Chicago-area high school jazz ensembles.

The UIC Jazz Faculty Combo, Student Combo and Jazz Ensemble will perform at midday. Admission is free.

The festival will culminate with a 7 p.m. concert featuring renowned harmonica virtuoso Howard Levy, the UIC Jazz Faculty Combo, and the UIC Jazz Ensemble, directed by drummer Joel Spencer, adjunct lecturer of music.

Marshall Vente – pianist / composer / arranger

Marshall Vente will be playing two roles at Katerina’s for this evening of “Southport Records Presents”:  performing solo at the piano, and accompanying vocalist Joanie Pallatto, reprising their critically acclaimed Southport Records recording, “Two” – Joanie interprets songs from the world song book of great pop and classic standards with Vente on the 9’ Baldwin Grand.

Vente, in everyday life, plays equal roles as Pianist, Bandleader, Composer, Arranger, Radio Host and Contractor.  A diverse taste in music aids his survival in the music business.  A life in jazz has taken him from touring Europe as a teenager, ‘68; a National Endowment for Arts jazz apprentice with Gil Evans and David Matthews, ’82 – ‘87; NEA & IAC Composer grants; collaborations and CDs with Eldee Young, Billy Harper, Neville York; and as impresario of his annual Jazz Tropicale Cruise aboard the tall ship Windy in mid-July since 1995.  His love of Brazilian music brought him to the airwaves as radio host of Jazz Tropicale heard every Sunday on 90.9fm WDCB since 1993 – “It’s a jazz show with a few palm trees!”  Vente is currently leading and playing gigs nearly every day!

Joanie Pallatto – vocalist / composer

A native of Xenia, Ohio, Joanie Pallatto is a graduate of The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.  Joanie toured with The Glenn Miller Orchestra as a featured vocalist before moving to Chicago in 1979 to pursue her career in music.

Pallatto’s discography includes recordings with Bradley Parker-Sparrow, Marshall Vente, Willie Pickens, Von Freeman, Bob Dorough, Fareed Haque, King Fleming, Tatsu Aoki, Bobby Lewis, Famoudou Don Moye and many more.

Co-owner and partner with pianist/composer and husband, Bradley Parker-Sparrow at Sparrow Sound Design Recording Studio and Southport Records, Joanie’s engineering expertise is displayed in the areas of recording, mixing and mastering, along with CD production, producing, arranging and composing.

Southport Records presents an ongoing series of events at Katerina’s on the first Saturday of every month!  Label partners Bradley Parker-Sparrow, piano and Joanie Pallatto, voice will open each set with their original duets and improvisations.  Southport Records will present a mix of artists from the label roster, featuring jazz, avant garde, classical, world and new music.  The co-host of this event, Katerina’s, has evolved into a unique listening experience and environment, with fine programming, including jazz, world, and pop forms. The Junta Ensemble has been together since 2003, but has been performing individually in Chicago for years in various genres of music, classical, gospel, jazz and R&B. What you will encounter is a meeting of individual taste to form an agreeable and pleasing blend as they put their collective spin on some jazz standards. The members of the group are as follows:

With this in mind, there is a segment in some of our performances where we invite a student in grades 3rd through the 12th grade who plays an instrument and know a jazz standard to come up and play a song with the ensemble.

Rich Cantú – Señor Cantú

     Southport Records presents the debut solo CD from singer-songwriter and guitarist Rich Cantú.  “Señor Cantú” is a studio recording, boasting 12 original compositions (in either Spanish or English) and one classic (“El Jinete.”)  Cantu weaves a spell with his stories and songs, complete with his ‘one man band’ of vocals, whistling, mouth clicks, percussive foot taps and guitar.

“On a warm Tuesday evening on Southport Avenue in Chicago, a voice resonated from the open front dining area of a restaurant called Coobah.  Turning into the bar, a slender man was playing electric guitar in the corner, next to a large amp that boasted the setting 96.  The broad tenor voice and lush chords fell into the evening air.  This was such a profound discovery, just 2 blocks south of Southport Records.  The voice was lush and real.  Many of the songs, in both English and Spanish, were Cantú originals.  Of Polish and Mexican descent, Cantú has mastered the art of the romantic ballad, via Chicago, and the world.”

Rich Cantu – Voice and Acoustic Guitar

     Rich Cantú is a singer/songwriter from Chicago who has been performing for over 20 years. Playing guitar, bass, piano and a variety of other instruments, he has performed at many venues in the Midwest. From the Congress Theatre to the Riviera, Rich has sung with numerous bands and mariachis as well as delighted audiences with his powerful voice and mastery of the guitar as a solo artist. He has performed on such shows as “Despierta America” as well as having a series of solo specials on local Chicago cable dedicated to his solo work. Rich Cantu led the Chicago based Spanish rock group “Antenna the Band” from 2005 -2009. As the songwriter and lead singer they had a #1 hit on Chicago radio with the song “Paris” for close to 6 months, along the way winning many awards and accolades for being the best Spanish rock band in Chicago.
