Rich Cantú – Señor Cantú

     Southport Records presents the debut solo CD from singer-songwriter and guitarist Rich Cantú.  “Señor Cantú” is a studio recording, boasting 12 original compositions (in either Spanish or English) and one classic (“El Jinete.”)  Cantu weaves a spell with his stories and songs, complete with his ‘one man band’ of vocals, whistling, mouth clicks, percussive foot taps and guitar.

“On a warm Tuesday evening on Southport Avenue in Chicago, a voice resonated from the open front dining area of a restaurant called Coobah.  Turning into the bar, a slender man was playing electric guitar in the corner, next to a large amp that boasted the setting 96.  The broad tenor voice and lush chords fell into the evening air.  This was such a profound discovery, just 2 blocks south of Southport Records.  The voice was lush and real.  Many of the songs, in both English and Spanish, were Cantú originals.  Of Polish and Mexican descent, Cantú has mastered the art of the romantic ballad, via Chicago, and the world.”

     Rich Cantú is a singer/songwriter from Chicago who has been performing for over 20 years. Playing guitar, bass, piano and a variety of other instruments, he has performed at many venues in the Midwest. From the Congress Theatre to the Riviera, Rich has sung with numerous bands and mariachis as well as delighted audiences with his powerful voice and mastery of the guitar as a solo artist. He has performed on such shows as “Despierta America” as well as having a series of solo specials on local Chicago cable dedicated to his solo work. Rich Cantu led the Chicago based Spanish rock group “Antenna the Band” from 2005 -2009. As the songwriter and lead singer they had a #1 hit on Chicago radio with the song “Paris” for close to 6 months, along the way winning many awards and accolades for being the best Spanish rock band in Chicago. Writing music and putting his own twist on all the classic music written over the years is his passion. “Enjoy every song you play” is his motto. Hope you agree and enjoy as well.

Alejandro was born in Waterloo, Iowa and raised in the Midwest. His musical interest was sparked by the radio and popular music. He studied at Northern Illinois University, Roosevelt University and privately with guitar guru Bobby Broom.

Alejandro has taught as part of the Ravinia Mentors’ program and through the Thelonius Monk Institute working on the fundamentals with high school musicians who show an appreciation and skill.

He released his debut recording ‘Urban Intervals,’ featuring Jodie Christian November 2011.

Along with the first-wave British Invasion bands like The Rolling Stones, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, and stateside groups like The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Siegel-Schwall Band were instrumental in The Great Blues Revival of the 1960′s. Like Paul Butterfield, Siegel-Schwall were Chicago-based, serving as the house band at the famed Pepper’s Lounge. They earned their spurs backing greats like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter and Willie Dixon.

From 1966 until they disbanded in 1974, they ranked among the most important forces in reaching the baby boomer audience that sustains the blues to this day. The Siegel-Schwall Band also pioneered the cross-fertilization of the blues with other forms, performing Bill Russo’s "Three Pieces For Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra" in 1968 with the San Francisco Symphony and The Boston Pops. Corky Siegel has continued this expansion of the blues with his project, Chamber Blues. The current band includes two other genuine notables, bassist Rollo Radford and drummer Sam Lay.

Radford’s resume stretches from Martha & The Vandellas to Sun Ra, giving him the artistic range to follow wherever Siegel and Schwall want to take the blues. Lay’s credentials are awesome. His stellar work with Muddy Waters, Little Walter and The Paul Butterfield earned him entry in both The Blues and The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. After several years of working on this project, Luciano Antonio, the Brazilian Jazz Guy, has released his first album entitled "Vida De Artista – An Artist’s Life". Luciano’s “Brazilian Grooves for Guitar” workshop will take you on a tour of many of Brazil’s patterns including Samba, Olodum, Xote, Baião, Partido Alto and Bossa Nova. In this workshop, guitar players will also get a chance to see and play percussion instruments and then learn how the guitar relates to these instruments as it grooves with them. Old Town School Brazilian percussion instructor Geraldo Oliveira will assist. Percussionists are welcome in this workshop. Students should bring their guitars and percussion instruments although a limited number of instruments will be provided.

Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli, guitar

Matteo Mela has released two solo albums and has made recital, television, and radio appearances throughout Europe and North America. Lorenzo Micheli appears regularly as soloist in recital and with orchestras worldwide and has rediscovered and published works by Llobet and Castelnuovo-Tedesco. In 2003 they formed SoloDuo, and together they have performed throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. Their recordings include works by de Fossa, de Lhoyer, and Giuliani as well as 19th- and 20th-century music for two guitars. Soundboard magazine describes their playing as “musical and virtuosic in equal measure” and “wonderfully full of life.” Part of the Segovia Classical Guitar Series, supported in part by the Chicago Classical Guitar Society.
