In January, Ben and Stephen Lynerd recorded 2 albums in a day and a half.  Pulling together some of our favorite musicians to work with, we assembled a team we thought could best represent our musical creations.  We were right.  It was truly humbling to work with such fine players and singers, as well as a first rate engineer.

The Albums

“All Together” was titled because it reflects the culmination of hours put into composing and arranging music, practicing, and developing friendships.  Put all of that into a room and it’s an incredible experience.  A mixture of sacred and non-sacred jazz, “All Together” original material, as well as some tunes from dear friends, like Shawn Maxwell and Jonathan Gilley.

“Christmas” again contains original material, and arrangements perfect for the Christmas season.

According to Chicago Jazz Magazine: The Paul Abella Trio is here to get its groove on. Their agenda is simple: to make jazz fun again. Taking their cues from a long line of jazz giants who had themselves a grand old time, they seek to build upon the legacies of Nat King Cole, Mose Allison, Eddie Harris, Les McCann, Mongo Santamaria and a thousand other jazz giants by playing tunes that people know and grooving on those tunes like there’s no tomorrow.

The Paul Abella Trio got its start in late 2006. Paul’s original idea was to emulate the later edition of the Nat King Cole Trio with Jack Costanzo. In a way, they have accomplished this with great elan, by using Nat’s playbook, without using his songbook. By utilizing percussion as opposed to a full drum set, they’re not only unique, but they’re also quiet enough for just about any situation that could ever arise. That said, their sound is still full enough that they can get good and funky when the mood strikes them. Beyond the left of center instrumentation, The Paul Abella Trio also concentrates on witty arrangements, quirky medleys and songs that people love. What they ended up with was a set list that covered everything from Louis Armstrong to Radiohead, played in a way that has consistently left jaws dropping and fingers popping.

The Paul Abella Trio is made up of three of the more unique musicians in the Chicago area. Paul is best known as the music director at  WDCB and as one of the review writers for  Chicago Jazz Magazine. But he’s also an inventive percussionist who can juggle polyrhythms while keeping things grooving all night long. Add to that a knowledge of music that can only come with working in record stores and at one of the hippest radio stations anywhere, and you have a solid rhythmic base with which to build a band upon.

 In 2007, the released their debut CD, "mainstreamism" .  It’s an eclectic offering that ranges from new spins on old classics (check out their takes on Caravan or La Vie En Rose) to ambitious arrangements of more modern fare (listen to what they do on REM’s Losing My Religion).

 The Paul Abella Trio is available for events of all shapes and sizes, both public and private. If your club needs a break from the norm, or your wedding needs a little spice, the Paul Abella Trio is the perfect choice.

Shirazette Tinnin has a Bachelor’s degree in music industry studies and performance from Appalachian State University. She has a Masters (in jazz studies) degree from NIU. She is a member of the graduate-level Liberace Jazztet. Shirazette had a student internship in 2002 at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops Orchestra and Quad Recording Studios. Shirazette has performed with a number of major artists, including Arturo Sandoval, Slide Hampton, Chris Vadala, and Melva Houston and Shirazette was a counselor and instructor at the 2006 NIU Jazz Camp.

Shirazette Tinnin is a blessed woman and a delightfully talented and soulful percussionist as well.

Try to catch her when you can, JUST TRY!!! She a woman with a mission and ON THE MOVE.

We met Greg Haar for the first time last night and he is such a great guy. He says he isn’t techno-savvy but he has 2 daughters to help along with all of this internet type action  – - so kudos girls! Show this to your dad! Also we learned that Greg makes these wild tie-dyed shirts on his own!  He told me the entire procedure which I was delighted to hear about since I have never done it myself.  So in addition to being a talented drummer in the J.B.Ritchie Power Trio, he is a creative man, a tolerant father and appreciates the likes of the Chicago Studio Club!
