Along with the first-wave British Invasion bands like The Rolling Stones, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, and stateside groups like The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Siegel-Schwall Band were instrumental in The Great Blues Revival of the 1960′s. Like Paul Butterfield, Siegel-Schwall were Chicago-based, serving as the house band at the famed Pepper’s Lounge. They earned their spurs backing greats like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter and Willie Dixon.

From 1966 until they disbanded in 1974, they ranked among the most important forces in reaching the baby boomer audience that sustains the blues to this day. The Siegel-Schwall Band also pioneered the cross-fertilization of the blues with other forms, performing Bill Russo’s "Three Pieces For Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra" in 1968 with the San Francisco Symphony and The Boston Pops. Corky Siegel has continued this expansion of the blues with his project, Chamber Blues. The current band includes two other genuine notables, bassist Rollo Radford and drummer Sam Lay.

Radford’s resume stretches from Martha & The Vandellas to Sun Ra, giving him the artistic range to follow wherever Siegel and Schwall want to take the blues. Lay’s credentials are awesome. His stellar work with Muddy Waters, Little Walter and The Paul Butterfield earned him entry in both The Blues and The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Chicago Blues Challenge Finals comes to an exciting conclusion at Buddy Guy’s Legends, on Sunday, November 7, 2010.  Music starts at 7:00 pm.  The finals will feature first and second place winners from the band competitions:  Charlie Love, Rob Blaine & Big Otis Blues, Chainsaw Dupont, and Doug James & the Pocket. They will be pitted against “Wild Card” competitors Charles “Delta Blues Hog” Hayes and J.B. Ritchie.  With six great blues bands and only one winner, this will be an explosive night of Chicago Blues.

We will also showcase our Youth Competition winners Jemiah “On Fire” & the Red Machine and our Solo/Duo winners Donna Herula & John Jochim.

It is sure to be a great night of blues, as our final six bands will be putting their best foot forward in order to impress the judges and win over new fans. Please come to support the Windy City Blues Society, as we raise money to send the final winning band down to Memphis in February for the 2011 International Blues Challenge! One of Chicago’s monster electric bassists, Frank Russell and his band opens Super Jamzz II! Chicago native Frank Russell has been playing bass since age 14. Throughout his busy, creative career, Frank has performed with Art Porter, Freddie Hubbard, Ramsey Lewis, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Alphonse Mouzon, Ken Chaney, Nicholas Barron, Mike Wolf, Willie Pickens and many others. He has also recorded five CDs with Chicago guitarist Henry Johnson and is a past recipient of the Hennessy Best of Chicago Jazz Search. Frank’s debut CD, Covering All Basses, was released in 2005. Frank is a bad ass bass player with a special love for the contemporary jazz of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock etc. Make no mistake though; Frank can swing mainstream jazz with the best of bassists.

Frank Russell’s ultra tight band opens Super Jamzz II with Charles Heath on drums, Tony Carpenter percussion, Greg Spero keys and Peter Lerner guitar. Special guests performing include Miles Davis keyboardist-MD, Robert Irving III, singer creative spontaneous genius Nicholas Barron, fretless bass master Brian Derek, sax master Brian Gephart, singer extraordinaire Nanette Frank, great bass guitar of Wally Hustin, bad ass drummer Clyde Davis and many more to be announced.

Super Jamzz II is an orchestrated variety show with some jamming and tons of improvisational music. Jazz, blues funk, percussion, great singing all happen at Super Jamzz. Super Jamzz II a magical music event not to be missed.

Scotty and The Bad Boys have been around the block a few times. Playing together since the late 70′s, this band has played on all sides of Chicago and throughout the Midwest.

Scotty "Bad Boy" Bradbury was raised in the concrete jungle known as Uptown in Chicago. Born some 50 years ago he came up singing and playing harmonica along side creators of the Chicago sound like Jimmy Reed and Big Walter Horton. He has toured extensively and internationally with Jimmy Rogers, Sam Lay, and John Brim.

Peter "Crash" Crawford has been playing guitar in Chicago since 1972 when he joined Mighty Joe Young’s Band for several months. In the 70′s and 80′s he played regularly with Jimmy Walker, Billy Branch, Sunnyland Slim, Eddie Taylor, Yank Rachell, Homesick James, among many others. In the late 80′s he opened B.L.U.E.S. Etcetera at 1124 W. Belmont with partners Rob Hecko and Bill Gilmore. In its day, B.L.U.E.S. was Chicago’s premiere venue for blues with seating for 250 + and regularly booking acts like Albert King, Otis Rush, Otis Clay and many more.

Tim Bradbury is Scotty’s older brother and has been playing bass and guitar for many years. He has been a regular in bands fronted by Jimmy Walker and Sunnyland Slim as well as Scotty and the Bad Boys.

Tom (Mot) Dutko has been playing drums in Chicago Blues bands since the very early 70’s He was a road warrior with Eddie Shaw and The Wolf Gang for years and was often heard with John Brim back in the day.
