Chicago Singer Spotlight is a showcase open to anyone: male or female, from the seasoned professional to the aspiring beginner. And the diversity doesn’t end there. A typical show encompasses music genres of all types including: jazz, rock, country, musical theater and original material. Each show consists of four vocalists performing a four-song set with a professional house band.

Shemekia Copeland + Rick Simcox & The ToneQuesters

Shemekia Copeland

At a young age, Shemekia Copeland is already a force to be reckoned with in the blues. While still in her 20s, she’s opened for the Rolling Stones, headlined at the Chicago Blues Festival and numerous festivals around the world, scored critics choice awards on both sides of the Atlantic (The New York Times and The Times of London) and shared the stage with such luminaries as Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Taj Mahal and JohnMayer. Heir to the rich tradition of soul-drenched divas like Ruth Brown, Etta James and Koko Taylor, Copeland’s shot at the eventual title of "Queen of the Blues" is pretty clear. By some standards, she may already be there.

 
Rick Simcox & The ToneQuesters

a Detroit native, moved to Chicago in 1997, whereupon the Blues immersion would slowly begin to take its hold. In 2005, Simcox formed the basic ToneQuesters  unit with Ryan Suzuka [harmonica] and "Willie J" Rauch [bass].  The band is currently playing promotional shows throughout the Chicagoland area and is, of course, backed by many exceptional musicians. The Fiery Furnaces

The Fiery Furnaces are a U.S. indie rock band formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2000. They played twice in Brooklyn as The Suckers before performing as The Fiery Furnaces (with an unchanged line-up). The band’s primary members are Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger. The brother and sister are originally from Oak Park, Illinois, a near-western suburb of Chicago.

from letters and e-mails between us over a 2-year period. They tell the story of two artists in development, in a meeting of hearts and minds. What started as a casual exchange became a revealing account of the personal struggles and dramatic changes that were happening in our lives. Our shared thoughts became intimate. Then, we turned those letters into songs and made a CD together. It’s by far the best thing either of us have created simply because it comes from the honesty of real life. And
it’s a very engaging live show moving between nylon acoustic guitar, dobro, grand piano and electric guitars." – Peter Karp

Tonight with the Rich South High School Jazz Band. The Rob Parton Big Band features a group of the finest musicians in Chicago. Musically, the band mirrors that of the European Radio Orchestras, where new music is the focus. The music features the sounds of the electric guitar, electric bass, percussion and musical styles outside of the traditional swing setting, hitting upon funk grooves, hip hop grooves, Latin grooves and of course the essence of it all, swing. In some ways it might be very similar to Gordon Goodwin’s Big PHAT Band intersecting with Maria Schneider’s Jazz Orchestra.

  If you are ON Harlem Avenue, facing OGDEN AVENUE, this would be your view. The address for Harlem Avenue Lounge is 3701 S. Harlem Ave., Berwyn, IL. That White Castle you see there is ON the actual corner of Harlem & Ogden, and its parking lot/drive-thru are next to an alley between it and Harlem Avenue Lounge. You can turn into this alley and there are a couple of spaces to park in, but only a couple, right there on the side of the alley-next to the guard rail dividing White Castle from the alley. The only reason we say this is because we did all of this & just want to help. Easiest just to turn around (no parking behind the lounge) (which is where you ENTER to get inside) and back out of the alley as there is PLENTY of street parking RIGHT ON Harlem Avenue. FOR FREE!

Here you are on Harlem Avenue – right on the alley, walk a ways down the alley to the back entrance.

 See the back door in the above photo, there is the chair where a very nice fellow named Dave was sitting. The bathrooms are by the back door. Next, the pool table / game area.

     Next is the bar and at the front of the bar, the stage! We went on a Friday night to see the J.B. Ritchie Power Trio. The owner Ken was there working away with his bartendress for the evening, Angie! Everyone was so  nice – we had a blast!
