Saxophonist, MELVIN BUTLER, in 1993, caught the attention of jazz vocalist Betty Carter and performed with her trio at Carnegie Hall during the JVC Jazz Festival. Melvin has also worked with Donald Byrd and Christian McBride, among others. Although relatively new to the Chicago scene, Melvin has been performing around the world with the highly acclaimed Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band. He is now developing quite a local following, having performed to a standing room only crowd at last year’s Hyde Park Jazz Festival and excited the audience during the Summer Jazz in the Courtyard series in Hyde Park.

BMR4 has been described as "a straight ahead jazz quartet from Chicago that incorporates blues, funk, Cajun, Latin, soul-jazz, and R&B into their act." The quartet features acoustic bassist CHRIS BERNHARDT, JAY MOYNIHAN on reeds and keyboard, MIKE RODBARD on drums, and NEAL ALGER on guitar. Neil Tesser wrote of BMR4 that it "plays a lot of songs rooted in blues and R & B. Music by James Brown jostles up against familiar tunes from Steely Dan or the Beatles; up-tempo modal jazz tunes from the 60s share space with moody, atmospheric pieces straight out of a movie soundtrack; and [it all includes] the infectious groove of John Scofield’s music. Hyde Park Jazz Society is pleased to present actress and vocalist Ava Logan at L26. A veterinarian by day and a jazz singer by night, Ava has become a favorite around town as she sings songs from vocalists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne. Joining her will be Miguel de la Cerna on piano, Chuck Webb on bass, and George Fludas on drums. James Walker of www.jazzchicago.net praised Ava’s "style and class and great delivery that capture the imagination and attention of the audience," and Harry Porterfield of CBS 2 Chicago has called her a "jewel of a vocalist."

Sunday, 7/24, 2011, The Hyde Park Jazz Society presents: The Jarrard Harris Quartet.  A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Jarrard found his way to Chicago a little over 11 years ago and has been part of the Chicago Jazz Ensemble (CJE), having performed with Jon Faddis, Art Hoyle, Pat Mallinger, Pharez Whitted, and Dana Hall. He is a music educator, composer, and terrific saxophonist. Describing a recording by Jarrard,  jazz reviewer, Ted Gioia, wrote that "Harris plays nine choruses full of high drama, each one better than its predecessor." Jarrard will be joined by BOBBY BROOM, guitar; MICHAEL KING, piano; JUNIUS PAUL, bass; PHIL FORNETTE,  drums.

HYDE PARK JAZZ SOCIETY!

The Sunday night jazz series that we have sponsored for almost five years is, temporarily, on hiatus. In addition to fines, the City of Chicago has closed Room 43 for thirty days for having presented our music without a PPA license. We are still attempting to clear the paperwork necessary to get the license, but we have encountered a number of obstacles. We view this as an impediment, but not as an end. Jazz will return to the mid south side. The Hyde Park Jazz Society has no intention of letting Jim Wagner’s dream end here!
