Paradise Waits is Chicago’s Grateful Dead experience, best known for their deeply creative and psychedelic improvisational jams. They have a long-standing ‘Grateful Dead Wednesday’ residency every week in Chicago. PW boasts a repertoire of over 200 GD songs, as well as many from Phish, Allmans, Dylan, Ween, and WSP. They also perform their own original material, rooted in blues, rock, country, and bluegrass.

An Evening With Rachelle Ferrell

To quote the Viper Alley website:

” Composer, lyricist, arranger, musician, and vocalist Rachelle Ferrell is a recent arrival on the contemporary jazz scene, but her visibility on the pop/urban contemporary scene has boosted her audience’s interest in her jazz recordings.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Ferrell got started singing in the second grade at age six. This no doubt contributed to the eventual development of her startling six-and-change octave range. She decided early on, after classical training on violin, that she wanted to try to make her mark musically as an instrumentalist and songwriter. In her mid-teens, her father bought her a piano with the provision that she’d learn to play to a professional level. Within six months, Ferrell had secured her first professional gig as a pianist/singer. She began performing at 13 as a violinist, and in her mid-teens as a pianist and vocalist. At 18, she enrolled in the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study composition and arranging, where her classmates included Branford Marsalis, Kevin Eubanks, Donald Harrison, and Jeff Watts. She graduated in a year and taught music for a while with Dizzy Gillespie for the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Through the ’80s and into the early ’90s, she worked with some of the top names in jazz, including Gillespie, Quincy Jones, George Benson, and George Duke.

Ferrell’s debut, “First Instrument,” was released in 1990 in Japan only. Recorded with bassist Tyrone Brown, pianist Eddie Green, and drummer Doug Nally, an all-star cast of accompanists also left their mark on her record. They include trumpeter Terrence Blanchard, pianists Gil Goldstein and Michel Petrucciani, bassists Kenny Davis and Stanley Clarke, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, and keyboardist Pete Levin. Her unique take on now-standards like Sam Cooke’s “You Send Me,” Cole Porter’s “What Is This Thing Called Love,” and Rodgers & Hart’s “My Funny Valentine,” captured the hearts and souls of the Japanese jazz-buying public.

In 1995, Blue Note/Capitol released her Japanese debut for U.S. audiences, and the response was similarly positive. Her 1992 self-titled U.S. debut, a more urban pop/contemporary album, was released on Capitol Records. Ferrell was signed to a unique two-label contract, recording pop and urban contemporary for Capitol Records and jazz music for Blue Note Records.

For four consecutive years in the early ’90s, Ferrell put in festival-stopping performances at the Montreaux Jazz Festival. Although Ferrell has captured the jazz public’s attention as a vocalist, she continues to compose and write songs on piano and violin. Ferrell’s work ethic has paid off, and Gillespie’s predictions about her becoming a “major force” in the jazz industry came true.

Her prolific songwriting abilities and ability to accompany herself on piano seem only to further her natural talent as a vocalist. “Some people sing songs like they wear clothing, they put it on and take it off,” she explains in the biographical notes accompanying First Instrument. “But when one performs four sets a night, six nights a week, that experience affords you the opportunity to present the song from the inside out, to express its essence. In this way, a singer expresses the song in the spirit in which it was written. The songwriter translates emotion into words. The singer’s job is to translate the words back into emotion.” Ferrell has made her mark not as a straight-ahead jazz singer and pianist, but as a crossover artist who is equally at home with urban contemporary pop, gospel, classical music, and jazz. “

"The Windy City All-Stars are organized by Russ Phillips, one of Chicago’s most versatile trombonists.  His father, Russ Sr., replaced the great Jack Teagarden with Louis Armstrong’s All Stars and now Russ keeps that tradition alive with this swinging 6-piece “Chicago Style” band.

The band features; Bobby Lewis on trumpet, a Chicago favorite multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, conductor and long-time Andy’s bandleader. Bobby’s career highlights include being musical director and featured soloist with Peggy Lee, travels with the Jack Teagarden sextet, performances with the Chicago Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony and many others.

Kim Cusack on clarinet is perhaps best known for his long association with James Dapogny’s Chicago Jazz Band and his more than thirty-five year tenure with the venerable Salty Dogs Jazz Band, Kim Cusack has also played and recorded with Gene Mayl’s Dixieland Rhythm Kings, Ernie Carson, Turk Murphy, George Brunis, and Wild Bill Davison.

Stewart Miller on bass, a native of Kentucky, moved to the area in 1988 after a 2-year stretch with the Glen Miller band. Stewart can be heard on recent recordings by Chicago’s Orbert Davis, Russ Phillips, singer/pianist Judy Roberts and trombonist Curtis Fuller.

Guitarist Andy Brown comes to Chicago from Cincinnati by way of New York City where he performed with Frank Wess, Harry Allen, Howard Alden and more. In his few short years in Chicago, Andy has become one of the busiest and highly sought after guitarists on the scene.

Bob Rummage on drums, maintains a versatile schedule of performances with a variety of Chicago Jazz ensembles, including Petra’s Recession Seven. In addition, he teaches jazz drum set and jazz combos at DePaul University.

Inspired by New York’s Jazz Composers Collective, the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective (CJCC) formed in 2001 and began presenting monthly concerts at the Green Mill, each featuring the work of two different jazz composers. Since then the CJCC has presented the music of over 50 composers with more than 140 Chicago area musicians performing. Guest composers have included well known Chicago musicians such as Jim Gailloreto, John McLean, Geof Bradfield, and Greg Ward, as well as numerous up and coming young jazz musicians.

“For ten years the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective has served as both laboratory and playground, steadfastly providing camaraderie, inspiration, and sanctuary,” says pianist Fred Simon. "It has been very encouraging to watch this grow," says founder and vibraphonist/composer Kathy Kelly. "We now have a regular forum for creating, performing, and listening to new music. Chicago jazz composers have used this unique opportunity to create outstanding original music." 

Pianist Kelly Brand says “… the collective has given me the opportunity to hear new works monthly, by a number of unique and talented jazz composers. My work is deeply affected by the fresh perspective and the inspiration I get from enjoying these concerts.”  Multi-Instrumentalist Lloyd Brodnax King’s music has also been influenced by the collective saying,  “CJCC keeps me in touch with old masters, who sound better every year, and with young hot shots — the future of jazz is in good hands.”

The Chicago Jazz Composers Collective artists-in-residence include some of Chicago’s most talented composer/musicians. Current members include Kathy Kelly, Kelly Brand, Jeff Beer, Caroline Davis, James Davis, Paul Hartsaw, Dave Onderdonk, Damon Short, Fred Simon and Matt  Ulery. Alumni composers Mitch Paliga and Lloyd Brodnax King also continue to present music for the concerts.

In addition to the monthly concerts, CJCC has twice presented concert series’ at the Chicago Cultural Center. The group has also been featured on WBEZ’s Eight Forty-Eight program, in Grammy Magazine online and the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s Jazzgram.

Bob Dogan:

Growing up near 63rd St. and Cottage Grove Ave. in Chicago, IL, pianist Bob Dogan came under the influence of the crop of jazz greats who performed at the many flourishing clubs in the neighborhood (including the Pershing Hotel, where Ahmad Jamal famously held forth). Virtually all of those venues are gone now, but the infectious energy and outsize personality that lit them up lives on in Dogan’s playing. A fluent, two-handed threat, he combines bop school finesse with modern harmonies, still influenced by his onetime teacher, Jaki Byard. Boasting past ties with the likes of Maynard Ferguson and Sunday’s festival honoree, Ira Sullivan, he’s the best kind of old school musician: classic without being nostalgic.

Dogan, who sometimes sings, frequently writes.  On Thursday, September 1, 2011, he’ll perform a set of originals with a band of distinguished longtime associates: bass trumpeter Ryan Shultz, saxophonist Ron Dewar, and the rhythm team featured on his recent trio album, My Blues Roots, bassist Dan DeLorenzo and drummer Joe Adamik. As he demonstrates on the recording, Dogan draws uncommon warmth from the blues. Many of today’s music-school-trained prodigies would kill to have his touch.

Under presiding judge and legend Quincy Jones, they were judged on July 9th and 10th, 2011, at the Montreux Palace, in Montreux, Switzerland, as a part of the prestigious Montreaux Jazz Festival.
