 Marshall Vente will be playing two roles at Katerina´s for this evening of  "Southport Records Presents":  performing solo at the piano, and accompanying vocalist Joanie Pallatto, reprising their critically acclaimed recording, "Two" – Joanie interprets songs from the world song book of great pop and classic standards with Vente on the 9´ Baldwin Grand.

Vente, in everyday life, plays equal roles as Pianist, Bandleader, Composer, Arranger, Radio Host and Contractor.  A diverse taste in music aids his survival in the music business.  A life in jazz has taken him from touring Europe as a teenager, `68; a National Endowment for Arts jazz apprentice with Gil Evans and David Matthews, ´82 – `87; NEA & IAC Composer grants; collaborations and CDs with Eldee Young, Billy Harper, Neville York; and as impresario of his annual Jazz Tropicale Cruise aboard the tall ship Windy in mid-July since 1995.  His love of Brazilian music brought him to the airwaves as radio host of Jazz Tropicale heard every Sunday on 90.9fm WDCB since 1993 – "It´s a jazz show with a few palm trees!"  Vente is currently leading and playing gigs nearly every day!

Snow on Sunday is a Chicago-based acoustic three-piece that formed in October of 2009. Combining powerful vocals in the vein of Regina Spektor with their own blend of folk and blues instrumentation, Snow on Sunday delivers a sometimes playful, sometimes somber sound like nothing you’ve heard before.

Stuart Chaseman is an accomplished singer / songwriter with long standing family ties to the Old Town School of Folk Music. It was there he studied and developed his craft, and still occasionally teaches and performs. From stage to studio, his many talents have made him one of the most sought after musicians in Chicago, performing with a wide variety of local and national acts including Peter Himmelman and musicians from the bands Train and The Bad Examples. His big voice is what will initially grab your attention, but it’s his gritty yet sensitive lyrics that will keep you coming back.

In the nineties, Stuart was a founding member and the primary songwriter of the rootsy rock band, The Tree Huggers. They developed a strong cult-like following from their marathon shows, as well as the requisite Springsteen comparisons. However, due to those all too common creative differences, the band dissolved but not before leaving an indelible mark on Chicago audiences. After focusing his attentions away from the music scene for a few years, playing only the occasional benefit show (mostly for progressive political causes), Chaseman inked a deal with the startup record company, Gonzo Music. Next Exit Brigadoon, his long-awaited solo CD, was released in 2010.

Hidden way behind a dark window on a quiet block on North Halsted. There is a space that blurs the boundaries between your regular Lincoln-park bar and a mellow fire-lit speak easy. It’s a place that presents both the excitement of large crowds and live hip-hop, and the anonymity of a cool whining darkness. The bar is lined with antique bottles from the turn of the century. Tonics, they were called, for their supposed abilities to counter any ailment. The look and style is indefinite. The soft blocks of leather sofa are a jigsaw puzzle, each night bearing new ways to interlock with themselves. The space has no set identity. It is to each guest, what he chooses to see. According to Chicago Jazz Magazine: The Paul Abella Trio is here to get its groove on. Their agenda is simple: to make jazz fun again. Taking their cues from a long line of jazz giants who had themselves a grand old time, they seek to build upon the legacies of Nat King Cole, Mose Allison, Eddie Harris, Les McCann, Mongo Santamaria and a thousand other jazz giants by playing tunes that people know and grooving on those tunes like there’s no tomorrow.

The Paul Abella Trio got its start in late 2006. Paul’s original idea was to emulate the later edition of the Nat King Cole Trio with Jack Costanzo. In a way, they have accomplished this with great elan, by using Nat’s playbook, without using his songbook. By utilizing percussion as opposed to a full drum set, they’re not only unique, but they’re also quiet enough for just about any situation that could ever arise. That said, their sound is still full enough that they can get good and funky when the mood strikes them. Beyond the left of center instrumentation, The Paul Abella Trio also concentrates on witty arrangements, quirky medleys and songs that people love. What they ended up with was a set list that covered everything from Louis Armstrong to Radiohead, played in a way that has consistently left jaws dropping and fingers popping.

The Paul Abella Trio is made up of three of the more unique musicians in the Chicago area. Paul is best known as the music director at  WDCB and as one of the review writers for  Chicago Jazz Magazine. But he’s also an inventive percussionist who can juggle polyrhythms while keeping things grooving all night long. Add to that a knowledge of music that can only come with working in record stores and at one of the hippest radio stations anywhere, and you have a solid rhythmic base with which to build a band upon.

 In 2007, the released their debut CD, "mainstreamism" .  It’s an eclectic offering that ranges from new spins on old classics (check out their takes on Caravan or La Vie En Rose) to ambitious arrangements of more modern fare (listen to what they do on REM’s Losing My Religion).

 The Paul Abella Trio is available for events of all shapes and sizes, both public and private. If your club needs a break from the norm, or your wedding needs a little spice, the Paul Abella Trio is the perfect choice.
