Jazz harmonica virtuoso and 2012 Grammy winner Howard Levy and noted musicians on the UIC jazz faculty will perform in an evening concert highlighting the third annual High School Jazz Festival at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Noted Chicago jazz artists who teach at UIC, including Ernie Adams (percussion), Patricia Barber (vocals), Ari Brown (saxophone), Orbert Davis (trumpet), Stewart Miller (bass), Peter Stoltzman (piano), and Zvonimir Tot (guitar), will score and critique the performances of 10 to 14 Chicago-area high school jazz ensembles.

The UIC Jazz Faculty Combo, Student Combo and Jazz Ensemble will perform at midday. Admission is free.

The festival will culminate with a 7 p.m. concert featuring renowned harmonica virtuoso Howard Levy, the UIC Jazz Faculty Combo, and the UIC Jazz Ensemble, directed by drummer Joel Spencer, adjunct lecturer of music.

“There was always talk about extending the day when we educate high school students to include a concert that not only would they attend, but that would also appeal to the public,” said Joel Spencer, adjunct lecturer and director of the jazz ensemble.

UIC’s High School Jazz Festival was initiated in 2010 for jazz bands of all sizes throughout the Chicago area.

Chicago’s Best Beer Garden Just Got Even Better!

Patricia D. "Pat" Surface, age 75, of 1625 Highland Lane, Quincy, IL 62301, died Friday, December 23, 2011 at 5:45 pm, in her home.

She was born September 5, 1936 in Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Arnold and Vivian Fellendorf Yoder. She married Robert T. Surface on June 22, 1958 in Keota, Iowa. He survives.

Pat earned her degree from Iowa State University in Home Economics. After marrying and raising children, Pat attained a second degree in Art from Quincy University (formerly Quincy College). Pat was a versatile and accomplished artist in many different mediums. She was the founder of the Midsummer Arts Faire which has become an annual fine arts event in Washington Park each summer, and where an award is presented each year in Pat’s name. Pat also worked for several years for GS Robins and Company as an executive secretary and purchasing agent.

Pat was a member of Madison Park Christian Church where she volunteered in an artistic capacity for Vacation Bible School. She was past president of the Quincy Newcomers Club and would periodically substitute teach. She had been a member of the Great River Water Color Society in Quincy, and the Hannibal Art Club as well as a volunteer in numerous Hannibal art functions.

Survivors in addition to her husband include her daughters, Tracey (Fred Starr) Surface of Chicago, IL, Stephany (Greg) Taylor of Quincy, and Jennifer (Jay) Arrowsmith of Fowler, IL; several grandchildren, Zachary of Palatine, IL, Tony, Isaac and Jonah of Quincy, IL, and Vance and Olivia of Fowler, IL; two sisters, Shirley Boshart and Sharon Fuqua; a brother, Richard Yoder, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Kevin Castle Surface and Robert Patrick Surface, and a brother, Victor Yoder.

Hansen-Spear Funeral Directors are in charge of the arrangements.

Tribute Night

As our 35th anniversary celebration comes to a close, we take a night to remember those who have passed on but who touched each of us in their own way. Friends, customers, loved ones, those we have come to call a part of the Heartland Café family. Beginning at 4:00 pm, we’ll have music from Al Day, Mike Felten, Micki Croisant, Rick Veras, Andrew Calhoun, Donna Adler, Norm "Mad Dog" Siegel, and many more.

Throughout our Anniversary celebration, the blues photos of Terry Abrahamson will be on display. The Heartland Café is currently hosting the first Chicago exhibition of 46 photos from this collection. Framed and matted prints of photos of The Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, Taj Mahal, the Blues Brothers’ Matt Murphy and more. The show is up at the Heartland Café through Labor Day, Monday, September 5, 2011.

New Belgium Brewing Company has donated the 2011 Fat Tire Tour De Fat Cruiser for us to raffle away during for our anniversary party, so, come to the Heartland Café any time from August 1, 2011 through August 13, 2011, drink Fat Tire and get a ballot to win the Fat Tire Cruiser. Enter as many times as you like. We’ll be picking the winner on Sunday. August 14, 2011,

Luciano’s “Brazilian Grooves for Guitar” workshop will take you on a tour of many of Brazil’s patterns including Samba, Olodum, Xote, Baião, Partido Alto and Bossa Nova. In this workshop, guitar players will also get a chance to see and play percussion instruments and then learn how the guitar relates to these instruments as it grooves with them. Old Town School Brazilian percussion instructor Geraldo Oliveira will assist. Percussionists are welcome in this workshop. Students should bring their guitars and percussion instruments although a limited number of instruments will be provided.

Leo Nocentelli was the principal songwriter of  The Meters which is one of most important funk bands of all time. They defined New Orleans funk, recorded countless hits for themselves and others, became one of the most sampled bands ever and won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.

Leo’s recording credits include Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Sting, Peter Gabriel, The Supremes, The Temptations, Robert Palmer, Jack Bruce, Dr. John, Robbie Robertson, George Duke, Mavis Staples, Etta James, Maceo Parker, Bobby Womack and countless others.

They wanted fewer rules about lifestyle, less materialism and more harmony with nature. Many protested. Status quo America answered with police and National Guard troops. There were riots, demonstrations and assassinations along with the peace, love, good vibes culture of sex drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. Toni’s book is a well-told remembrance of her journey from being a popular high school cheerleader to being an active participator in the counterculture.

This is a great musical series focusing on female singer/songwriters in, around and touring thru Chicago.

Each Wednesday, “Four” female performers will showcase their talents in a show. For one month, the same four performers will be featured, but will rotate and change their sets.

NEW SHOWCASE CREATES VENUE FOR UP AND COMING FEMALE SINGER SONGWRITERS

“Four Women Showcase ” offers the only showcase in Chicago dedicated to new female singer/songwriters and performers!

And just a little bit of trivia that some might enjoy – Crystal Bowersox – Yes, the one and only American Idol fabulous performer, played in “Four Women” 3 times!   We Love you Crystal and wish you all the best!

“Four Women Showcase ” – the music series which began in September of 2008 to help bring music from female singer/songwriters to the masses happens each and every Wednesday night at Mary’s Attic. In addition, you can find “Four Women” appearing around the city at places like Circuit, Heartland Cafe and many others – just keep an eye out on the event calendar.
