Inspired by New York’s Jazz Composers Collective, the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective (CJCC) formed in 2001 and began presenting monthly concerts at the Green Mill, each featuring the work of two different jazz composers. Since then the CJCC has presented the music of over 50 composers with more than 140 Chicago area musicians performing. Guest composers have included well known Chicago musicians such as Jim Gailloreto, John McLean, Geof Bradfield, and Greg Ward, as well as numerous up and coming young jazz musicians.

“For ten years the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective has served as both laboratory and playground, steadfastly providing camaraderie, inspiration, and sanctuary,” says pianist Fred Simon. "It has been very encouraging to watch this grow," says founder and vibraphonist/composer Kathy Kelly. "We now have a regular forum for creating, performing, and listening to new music. Chicago jazz composers have used this unique opportunity to create outstanding original music." 

Pianist Kelly Brand says “… the collective has given me the opportunity to hear new works monthly, by a number of unique and talented jazz composers. My work is deeply affected by the fresh perspective and the inspiration I get from enjoying these concerts.”  Multi-Instrumentalist Lloyd Brodnax King’s music has also been influenced by the collective saying,  “CJCC keeps me in touch with old masters, who sound better every year, and with young hot shots — the future of jazz is in good hands.”

The Chicago Jazz Composers Collective artists-in-residence include some of Chicago’s most talented composer/musicians. Current members include Kathy Kelly, Kelly Brand, Jeff Beer, Caroline Davis, James Davis, Paul Hartsaw, Dave Onderdonk, Damon Short, Fred Simon and Matt  Ulery. Alumni composers Mitch Paliga and Lloyd Brodnax King also continue to present music for the concerts.

In addition to the monthly concerts, CJCC has twice presented concert series’ at the Chicago Cultural Center. The group has also been featured on WBEZ’s Eight Forty-Eight program, in Grammy Magazine online and the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s Jazzgram.

The Heartland Chapter of Athletes United for Peace holds five 5k runs/walks each year.  Our Heat of the Summer 5k will take place during our anniversary celebrations.  There is no charge to participate: Run Free! Show up at the Heartland Café at 7000 N. Glenwood before 8 a.m.  We walk to Loyola Park and run the measured 5k course along the beautiful shore of the Great Lake Michigan.

Tribute Night

As our 35th anniversary celebration comes to a close, we take a night to remember those who have passed on but who touched each of us in their own way. Friends, customers, loved ones, those we have come to call a part of the Heartland Café family. Beginning at 4:00 pm, we’ll have music from Al Day, Mike Felten, Micki Croisant, Rick Veras, Andrew Calhoun, Donna Adler, Norm "Mad Dog" Siegel, and many more.

Throughout our Anniversary celebration, the blues photos of Terry Abrahamson will be on display. The Heartland Café is currently hosting the first Chicago exhibition of 46 photos from this collection. Framed and matted prints of photos of The Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, Taj Mahal, the Blues Brothers’ Matt Murphy and more. The show is up at the Heartland Café through Labor Day, Monday, September 5, 2011.

New Belgium Brewing Company has donated the 2011 Fat Tire Tour De Fat Cruiser for us to raffle away during for our anniversary party, so, come to the Heartland Café any time from August 1, 2011 through August 13, 2011, drink Fat Tire and get a ballot to win the Fat Tire Cruiser. Enter as many times as you like. We’ll be picking the winner on Sunday. August 14, 2011,

during evening of our tribute to Friends passed night. The winner will need to be present to win the bike, so all you have to do from now until August 14, 2011, is come to the Heartland Café or Red Line Tap and drink Fat Tire: you’ll receive a ballot for every Fat Tire you drink!

Mary’s Attic is SUCH a fun & festive LIVE MUSIC venue. They have a variety of  events, a colorful atmosphere and a friendly staff. We checked out  the Four Women Showcase! It’s a great musical series focusing on female singer/songwriters in, around and touring thru Chicago. Each Wednesday, “Four” female performers showcase their talents in a show. For one month, the same four performers will be featured, but will rotate and change their sets.

“Four Women Showcase ” offers the only showcase in Chicago dedicated to new female singer/songwriters and performers!

And just a little bit of trivia that some might enjoy – Crystal Bowersox – Yes, the one and only American Idol fabulous performer, played in “Four Women” 3 times!

“Four Women Showcase ” – the music series which began in September of 2008 to help bring music from female singer/songwriters to the masses happens each and every Wednesday night at Mary’s Attic. In addition, you can find “Four Women” appearing around the city at places like Circuit, Heartland Cafe and many others – just keep an eye out on the event calendar.
